The Power: Exploring The Power of Women

SYNOPSIS

In The Power the world is a recognisable place: there's a rich Nigerian kid who lounges around the family pool; a foster girl whose religious parents hide their true nature; a local American politician; a tough London girl from a tricky family.

But something vital has changed, causing their lives to converge with devastating effect. Teenage girls now have immense physical power - they can cause agonising pain and even death. And, with this small twist of nature, the world changes utterly. This extraordinary novel by Naomi Alderman, a Sunday TimesYoung Writer of the Year and Granta Best of British writer, is not only a gripping story of how the world would change if power was in the hands of women but also exposes, with breath-taking daring, our contemporary world.

MILANA'S REVIEW

The Power has left me with very mixed feelings. I loved the idea and overall concept. Imagine a world where women suddenly develop the power to produce electricity from within themselves and are able to project that power outwards! Doesn't that sound awesome?! An amazing thing about The Power were the nods to rape culture and the spin Alderman put on it. She has created a view that focuses on what the world would be like if men lived in constant fear of their personal safety. Her potent words gave me chills and I wanted to run down the street shoving the book into people's hands just so they could see. Or would it be more effective if I just read it aloud to passerby? While all of this was done well I did find some hiccups later in the book.

About halfway I felt the story became stagnant and I was bogged down with one of the perspectives (as the book is told through four perspectives) and found my attention span was leaving midway through chapters. Unfortunately it just felt a bit too long for me. I definitely would've preferred this one as a short story. Having pointed out these problem areas for me I do feel this is an important book the public needs to read. It might just open up someone's eyes to what's really happening in the world today. It would make a great movie!!

**Thank you to HBG Canada for sending me a finished copy, all in all I did enjoy The Power.**
