Well, that was just beautiful! I am in awe of the sentences Madeline Miller creates. They flow so smoothly and effortlessly, as if you're dipping your hand in a pool of still water. Everything about Circe was amazing. I was completely mesmerized. So much so that I really dragged this one out. I could've read it in one sitting but I instead chose to read a bit and stop to really let the words soak in.
If you're unsure about reading it because you're unfamiliar with Greek Mythology don't worry, you don't have to be an expert or even know anything about the myths to read Circe. If on the other hand you're Greek Mythology obsessed I truly think Miller has created a beautiful connection between the myths in her own way. I love the way she's pulled them together to tell Circe's story.
If you loved The Song of Achilles you'll love Circe. Just don't expect it to be the same. It is not a love story but rather a journey into womanhood and coming to terms with who you are. With The Song of Achilles I felt enraptured in a fast paced, heart ripped out of my chest, way. With Circe I felt at peace and at ease reading her story.
