Neverwhere: A Book With Two Of The Best Side Characters Ever

SYNOPSIS

Published in 1997, Neil Gaiman’s darkly hypnotic first novel, Neverwhere, heralded the arrival of this major talent and became a touchstone of urban fantasy. Over the years, a number of versions were produced both in the U.S. and the U.K. Now, this author’s preferred edition of his classic novel reconciles these versions and reinstates a number of scenes cut from the original published books. Neverwhere is the story of Richard Mayhew, a young London businessman with a good heart and an ordinary life, which is changed forever when he is plunged through the cracks of reality into a world of shadows and darkness—the Neverwhere. If he is ever to return to the London Above, Richard must join the battle to save this strange underworld kingdom from the malevolence that means to destroy it.

MILANA'S REVIEW

Oh what a delight! I absolutely loved this! I don't think I've ever read a book before where I loved the side characters more than the main characters and wanted more more more from them. Going to break this post down in a different way... by characters!

Mr. Croup & Mister Vandemar

OH MY GOSH, these two were hilarious! I am obsessed with these two. They were so deliciously dark and creepy. I was hooked to every part that had them in it. The banter between these two was amazing and I just wanted more. What are the chances Mr. Gaiman will grace us with an entire book of short stories focusing on Mr. Croup & Mister Vandemar. It's been a week since I finished and I'm still thinking about them!

Door

I liked Door! She is one of the main characters but there was something missing for me. She was so mysterious I really wanted more from her. I wanted to know everything about her past and I needed to be inside her head more. It fell a bit short for me here.

Richard

Oh man I did not connect with Richard AT ALL. This is why I did not give the book 5 stars. I just didn't find anything about him that I really liked. He was just kind of there and he was needed to progress the book. I found this strange because Gaiman's main POVs are usually so strong but not for this one for some reason.

Serpentine

Oooooo, such a minor character but I loved her! Not going to say anything more about her though.

GUYS, read it! My very wonderful friend Liz (check out her Instagram HERE) recommended this one to me and I'm so glad she did!
