Bonfire: Jessica Jones Sans The Superpowers

SYNOPSIS

It has been ten years since Abby Williams left home and scrubbed away all visible evidence of her small town roots. Now working as an environmental lawyer in Chicago, she has a thriving career, a modern apartment, and her pick of meaningless one-night stands. But when a new case takes her back home to Barrens, Indiana, the life Abby painstakingly created begins to crack. Tasked with investigating Optimal Plastics, the town's most high-profile company and economic heart, Abby begins to find strange connections to Barrens’ biggest scandal from more than a decade ago involving the popular Kaycee Mitchell and her closest friends—just before Kaycee disappeared for good. Abby knows the key to solving any case lies in the weak spots, the unanswered questions. But as Abby tries to find out what really happened to Kaycee, she unearths an even more disturbing secret—a ritual called “The Game,” which will threaten the reputations, and lives, of the community and risk exposing a darkness that may consume her. With tantalizing twists, slow-burning suspense, and a remote, rural town of just five claustrophobic miles, Bonfire is a dark exploration of the question: can you ever outrun your past?

My immediate reaction to this book was YES, KRYSTEN RITTER WROTE A BOOK! And when I realized it was actually fiction and not a memoir like many celebrities tend to lean towards I was even more excited. My first experience with Ritter as an actress was in Gilmore Girls, a side character. Second experience was watching her in Don't Trust The B**** In Apt 23, and finally my favourite role of hers was Jessica Jones. That performance was amazing and so unlike anything she's done before I absolutely loved it! I knew when I saw that she had written Bonfire we'd experience some of the grittiness of Jessica in this book. And it worked! And I loved it! Read on for reasons why Bonfire should be your next read!

1. The main character!

Abby is strong, complicated and although unreliable at times you find yourself rooting for her the entire way. Think Jessica Jones without the super powers.

2. The town of Barrens.

A small town full of mystery, suspense, hidden secrets and disappearances. I loved the backdrop of this book and the dark, gritty tone.

3. The mystery of the disappearance of Kaycee.

Now this was one of the focal points of the plot. A girl goes missing out of high school and no one has heard from her in over 10 years. Abby haunted by this returns to the town to uncover the truth.

Ritter did such a great job fleshing out Abby’s growth and the mystery surrounding the town. Her fresh take on suspense is excellent and I loved the flow of her writing. Looking forward to her next book!

Thank you Penguin Canada for sending me a finished copy! It was such a compelling read.
